Arthroscopy

There was a time when correcting joint disease meant long incisions – and an equally long recovery time. But today, many joint surgeries can be performed using a minimally-invasive technique called arthroscopy. Arthroscopy uses a much smaller incision – often only a quarter inch – which means recovery time can be significantly less and post-op discomfort is also minimized. Plus, arthroscopy is so versatile, it can even be used to diagnose the cause of joint pain.

How is arthroscopy performed?

Arthroscopy uses a special instrument called an arthroscope that’s designed to be used through very small incisions near a joint. A tiny camera mounted near the end of the scope is used to capture real-time video images of the structures in and around the joint. Those images are sent back to a viewing monitor, enabling the orthopedic surgeon to have a clear, “up-close” view of the joint without the need for big incisions.

During arthroscopy, the surgeon can examine the joint to determine the cause of joint pain, stiffness, swelling and other symptoms, or perform surgery or other treatments to repair certain types of joint damage. Arthroscopy is usually performed on an outpatient basis, which means you’ll be able to go home the same day.

What kinds of joint problems can be treated with arthroscopy?

In addition to diagnosing the cause of pain and other symptoms, arthroscopy can be used to treat problems in the knees, shoulders, elbows, wrists and ankles, including acute and chronic issues like:

Usually, one or more additional small incisions are made to allow the surgeon to insert instruments used to perform the repairs.

What happens after an arthroscopy procedure?

Because arthroscopy is minimally invasive, most patients experience a relatively quick recovery, often returning to work and some activities within a couple of weeks or less. It can take a few more weeks before you’ll be able to resume more physically-demanding activities, including sports. Overall, your recovery time will depend on the surgery or treatment you receive during your procedure, as well as your overall health. Your surgeon will be able to give you more specifics during your consultation appointment.

Joint pain is not normal.

Joint pain, stiffness, “grinding” and other joint symptoms are not a normal part of aging, nor are they a normal part of leading a physically-active lifestyle. They are a sign of an underlying problem. And if you ignore your symptoms, they’re almost sure to get worse over time. In order to relieve your symptoms – and help prevent permanent joint damage and disability – you need to see an orthopedist at the earliest sign of symptoms. Don’t let your joint problem rob you of your mobility and your quality of life. Call Franklin Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at (615) 771-1116 and schedule a consultation and evaluation today.
