PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. Platelets are cells in our blood that perform a number of functions, but most importantly they help to clot blood when we’re injured and bleeding. Once the platelets begin to clot, they orchestrate a series of miracles which allow the body to heal. They do this by releasing growth factors which signal to the body that it’s time to perform its next step in the healing cascade.

For the last year and a half our staff and patients have witnessed the healing power of platelets. Through our PRP procedures we have been able to significantly alleviate arthritis pain when all other options failed, we’ve seen athletes return to their sport with amazing turn around times following an injury, and we’ve had week-end warriors completely resolve their bursitis and tendonitis. PRP is truly a miraculous procedure and we’re very proud to offer it!

A PRP procedure is done in our office and it typically takes about 15 minutes. We draw a small amount of blood from a vein and then process that blood to separate the platelets and plasma from the red and white blood cells. The platelet rich plasma is then injected into the affected area which catalyzes the healing process. The platelets begin to work immediately and the results are often appreciated in a few weeks and sometimes even a few days.

Research is ongoing and we expect that platelet rich plasma will be a great option for our patients and an expanding list of orthopedic conditions.
